COMICS JOURNAL 17: Watchmen (Non-Sequitur Transition, Closure)

« Previous     Next »
Title: Watchmen
Author: Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons

This book used the non-sequitur transition method very successful and artistic. For example, on page 43, the authors was telling two events that happening at the same time but in different places with different characters. First, the Comedian's funeral was held in New York in a rainy day. Then the panel shifted to California with Laurie visiting her mom Sally in a sunny day. The panels keep shifting between the two events but readers do not have difficulty in distinguishing the events. This is because the authors used different color mood to distinguish the events. For example, all panels that are relating to Edward Blake's funeral were in dark and purple background and all panels referring to Sally's room were in fresh colors such as red, yellow, orange, and green. To link the panels of two events together, there is red color in every panel. For example, someone held a bunch of red flowers in Eddie's funeral, and Laurie also brought with her red flowers for her mother. Where there are no red flowers in the panel, the authors highlighted other items in red such as an aircraft on the first panel, and the ribbon on the hat on the last panel in this page. This linkage made two unrelated events looks related and helped audience to connect the relationship between Sally and Eddie through closure.
